About

Twenty-five+ years of seeing both sides clearly.

Career Arc

I began my career writing code. Over the next twenty-plus years, I moved from programmer to engineering leader, from project and program management to portfolio leadership and PMO direction. I have worked alongside developers debugging real systems, and I have sat in rooms where multi-million-dollar decisions were made under pressure.

Vantage Point

That path gave me a dual perspective: a detailed understanding of how work actually gets done, and a broad view of how strategy, incentives, and leadership decisions shape outcomes. I have seen how limited portfolio visibility can obscure ownership, dependencies, and risk, leaving leaders to make consequential decisions with an incomplete picture.

The Pattern

The pattern is often one of misperception: apparent visibility can mask an incomplete picture. Organizations may know about approved AI initiatives while missing capabilities introduced through SaaS updates, vendor platforms, embedded features, employee tools, or automated workflows. That creates a gap between what leaders believe exists in the AI estate and what is actually operating. In that gap, ownership becomes unclear, controls may be incomplete, evidence is fragmented, and accountability weakens. Closing that gap is the starting point for effective AI governance and oversight.

Nous Altus

Nous Altus reflects that perspective. Nous, the Greek word for mind and reason. Altus, the Latin word for both height and depth. Together, they represent the ability to see the broader landscape while going deep enough to understand what actually exists within the estate, how it is connected, and where governance is needed.

The Work

Today that perspective has a clear focus: Enterprise AI Portfolio Governance & Oversight. AI can enter an organization through enterprise platforms, embedded SaaS capabilities, vendor solutions, employee tools, custom applications, and automated workflows. Without a consolidated view, leaders may not know what AI exists, who owns it, what it is intended to do, what governance evidence exists, or what still requires review.

You cannot govern what you cannot see.

Through Nous Altus, I help organizations establish the visibility and operating structure required to govern AI as an enterprise portfolio. AI Estate Discovery creates the baseline. From there, the work connects ownership, risk routing, governance evidence, decisions, lifecycle oversight, monitoring, and portfolio-level visibility into value and unresolved issues.

My role is not to replace Security, Privacy, Legal, Compliance, or technical-model specialists. It is to build the connective governance layer that makes their requirements, decisions, evidence, and unresolved actions visible and usable at enterprise scale.

That work draws on both sides of my background: an early foundation in software development and decades of experience in portfolio governance, transformation, operating-model design, and executive decision support. AI governance increasingly sits at the intersection of those disciplines.

The Upstream Thinker newsletter extends the same philosophy: problems become harder downstream when visibility, meaning, ownership, or decision boundaries are unclear upstream.
